ITINERARY
Isthmus of Corinth
Corinth is an ancient city in the Peloponnese peninsula also famous for the Corinth Canal, one of the most significant constructions made by man, built between 1881 and 1893 and considered an engineering marvel. Spanning a depth of 6.3 kilometres it cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth connecting the Gulf of Corinth in the Ionian Sea with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea.
This is where our day trip to Corinth will start. You will get to admire the narrow land bridge of the Isthmus of Corinth and if we are lucky we might even see a ship passing through. You will get a chance to take plenty of photos and have a drink or snack at one of the cafes located near.
Ancient Corinth, Temple of Apollo and Acrocorinth
Up next we will visit Ancient Corinth, the original city of Corinth which held significant importance during the Greek Hellenistic and Roman times. Founded in the 10th century BCE, it was the largest city in ancient Greece and the richest port, a fact that made Corinth an important trade center.
The archaeological site of Corinth houses several important structures with the Temple of Apollo being the most well-known and awe-inspiring monument.
Temples dedicated to the Olympian Gods are scattered all over mainland Greece, and we have made sure to include the most important ones in our tours, not only in Cape Sounion but also in ancient Olympia, Delphi and other locations.
Acrocorinth & Corinth Archaeological Sites
Other monuments you will get to admire are the Acrocorinth, also of great significance as it was the Acropolis of ancient Corinth and served as a castle. Furthermore, the ancient Corinth market, the Propylaea, the Peirini fountain, the conservatory, The Corinthian Grand Theater, the relics of the gymnasium, and the Asklepieion. The archaeological finds at the site also include fine mosaics, Greek and Roman sculptures as well as an outstanding number of Greek pottery objects.
